Film Festivals
As many of you well know, Northport has a decent population of videographers, especially in high school. Video is so popular with high school/college kids in Northport because of one man, the late Bob Mondanaro. Whether you had him as a teacher or not, Mondo affected you because he made Northport’s video program what it is today. Yea I know, a lot of you might say that’s not much, but what schools do you know of have a video class for each year in high school?? Whether you’re a complete slacker or your bustin your balls on the shitty linear editors, video is an ill class.

Now I know a lot of you kids are puttin out some real good shit, and you got the equipment to do it, I mean I see kids walkin around the high school with VX-2000's, VX-1000s, and GL-1's like it aint no thang. If you have some good vids that you put together yourself, try entering one or two into a film festival. It doesn’t have to be an hour long dustin martinson/AJ Ingolia piece of shit err I mean epic type deal. If it tells a story, or has music, or just looks cool, go ahead and enter it. You got nothing to lose. Most festivals will even give you tips on how to make your shit top notch, better than Kubrick. Ok, maybe not. And if you do well you can get awards, cash, and not to mention winning a festival looks mighty good on that college transcript.

The easiest to enter, although not really a film festival, is the Long Island Media Arts show, which usually takes place around late March at the lamest college ever, Five Towns College. The good thing about this event is the art department usually make a field trip out of it and we miss school. At this show, you present your video in front of a small audience of other students and teachers and two or more judges. After you present the video the judges comment and ask questions about your vid and give you a sheet with a rating. All excellents is good shit, definitely somethin to throw in to your portfolio.

The Reel Teens USA Film festival was started last year by Barry Kerr. Barry actually checked out the LI media arts show and was impressed so he called up Mondo and asked him for assistance in spreading the word. This festival is held up in the very cool but small town of Hunter NY, just a mile or two past Hunter Mountain in a little theater. I participated in this festival last year, and it was very cool. Although mostly from the northeast, it was a national contest, with a few entries from the west coast. Email me for info on dates and deadlines for the 2002 Reel Teens USA Film Festival.

CW Post is having a film festival this year called the High School Video Festival and Competition. Dont ask me who names these things, they're fuckin terrible. But anyway, there will be a cash award for 1-3rd places, and there will even be a non-competitive part of the festival where you can just have your video evaluated and talk to judges. Sounds like a good deal to me. Email me for more info on this one too.

Theres hundreds of festivals goin on all the time, these are just three that are fairly local are coming up in the spring.
Also, if anyone is interested in buying a 2000 Sony TRV-120 Digital 8 camcorder with a Top Dawg(Light & Motion) housing with lights, case and charger, EMAIL ME

Fuck yeah, good to see you youngsters taking an interest in something other than graffiti, drugs and hondas.

Keep filmin' never give up, never let some "pro" tell you your work is shit, and someday you'll get paid ridiculous money to do the stuff you would've done for free anyway.

Ya ok, usually I don't bother posting I just read whatever people decide to put up, but this topic kind of got my interest. Seeing as how i am organizing with the school a Mondo Film Fest for students in the spring. It's going to be open to all students and will be on May 18th. Alumni can have work shown too, people whose video's suc... i mean are not the best will be shown on 1 of 3 or 4 set up in the commons half hour before everyone is let into auditorium, where at first we will show alumni work, and then have short intermission followed by student contest. Certificate will be awarder to best student piece.

oh ya, sorry but it will cost you to enter festival, and to go see it unless you are showing something in auditorium, the moneyt is going to help Mondo scholarship.
