Northport blazes on 4/20
Everyones a little bit Irish on St. Patrick's Day, and everyone's a little bit high on 4/20. Potheads and even non-potheads alike joined together to smoke sweet mary jane in celebration of Jah, I think. But in the spirit of the day I'd have to say that like the friend with lots of money, lathum lumber yard smoked out the town. For blocks and blocks the smoke was choking the throats from all those burning trees. Now who or what sparked this beast I don't really know, maybe some of you boring wastes of space can leave their two bits on this subject. The likelihood is that it will be false information, trying to make some sort of funny joke that falls far short of hilarity, or maybe it's just drunk/high rambling, either way, ehhh. fuck it. who cares? I'm already bored of this detective work. I just wish I had some marshmellows or perhaps other smore ingredients and about a 90 ft. pole with which to roast with. The next subject I'd like to address with my article is the insane amount of slack-jawed gawkers that roamed in drobes of hundreds to see the flames shoot 4 stories in the air. 10 year olds running down the roads on foot, 14 year olds riding their bikes, 41 year olds staring with craned necks, 52 year olds in quiet solitude or blasting across the alkali flats in a jet-powered, monkey-navigated... and it goes on like this. All in all, it was a fun night for everyone... well, everyone who doesn't own a lumber yard or an indoor roller hockey rink.

Lumber yard catches fire

(04/20/02) NORTHPORT (AP) -- A fire broke out at a lumber yard in northern Long Island Saturday night. Witnesses said the fire could be seen across the Long Island Sound in Connecticut. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

The fire broke out at Latham Brothers lumber yard on Laurel Avenue and Route 25-A in Northport. Fire companies from Northport and eight nearby towns responded to the scene, according to a spokeswoman from the Suffolk County Fire and Rescue Department who did not want to be identified. She said fire departments from two additional towns were on standby.

Further details were not immediately available.

A man who answered the telephone at the lumber yard and identified himself as the owner said the fire was "pretty big." He then said, "This is not a good time," and hung up the phone.

the fire was caused from a big propane tank that blew up in the back of the lumber yard, what happened to the roller rink?

I dont think anyhting happen to the hockey rink majorly, the side may have caught on fire a little but i was watching and the fire department was doing a good job pushing the fire back. I was taking a poopoo when i heard a loud explosion, It was infact the lumber yard.

Well from what i saw, the propane tanks did not blow till around 9pm or so, but the fire was blazing since around 815 or 830ish, i came outside of stop & shop to see massive flames reaching far above the trees, iwas guessing the fire was like 50-60 ft in the air.
i also heard that some fire fighters were hurt, is this true?

It was obviously Latham's competitor's who organized the arson. It was burned down once already, for insurance. Home Depot executives are probably behind this. Its sad that gorgeous new building was destroyed. Maybe Home Depot should be razed?

It has to be arson, or just a crazy coincidence. 2nd time for Lathams, that yard by Huntington Station went up in the past year, the other yard on Larkfield a while back..

i think it was bin laden

the whole thing was just a waste of time for me to walk from my house and watch a fire i could have started in my backyard :(

My opinion, on the whole fiasco.

The first Latham Bros. fire, was a clever amsterpiece of planned arson, for the obvious insurance benefits. Now that they have successfully beaten the system, they fell prey to bad luck. So now, there left with a burned down lumberyard(for the second time), and a situation that looks like they burned the fucker down, again. Not too good for them.

So my prediction, is that Lathams once again gets their insurance money, and goe on unscathed. The only reason I say this, is because I am not the owner of Lathams. If I was, I would have been arrested for arson back at the first blaze, since I get screwed, always.

I'd like to see Latham's insurance premiums next year. It probably doesn't look so good to your insurance company if you burn your place down twice in a couple years- I bet that the current owners have to sell because they won't be able to make a profit after the premium hike.

Actually this is the 3rd time that place has ever was set to flames.
And someone told me that it was some nazis celebrating hitlers birthday, but i think it was the Lathams Bros or what ever because last time they burned dowm the front building and got a brand new building and i think they just want a new lumber yard as well

TO correct my last sentance- The 3rd time the place has ever set to flames
» Chuck • 04/22/02

the fire actually wasnt arson suprisingly it was started by a fuse box that lilco sent straight electricity to and because the building was old and wasnt grounded good it started a fire which spread to other buildings and caused the propane tanks to explode. sorry to disappoint you guys but thats the truth
» Jason • 04/24/02

Phew, thanks for clearing that up, Jason. I mean, who needs investigators when we have you? And with the credentials that you provide on top of your absolutely obvious conclusion, man! It's like sunshine on a cloudy day.
» Chad • 04/25/02

actually thats where i got it from, the investigators to the fire, also called the arson squad, so i think they know what their talking about
» Jason • 04/29/02

bin laden...deffinatly
» johny • 04/29/02

i think its the latham bros cult who while smoking weed accidentally lit a fuse box on fire, which then started the blaze and spreda to the propane tanks and then they ignited. -message to latham bros.-dont burn down ur place again
» Tim • 04/30/02

well first of all the propaane tanks never blew it was actually a storage shed full of plumbing supplies, second for all you worried the new building that they built was not really effected by the fire, and last but not least the arson squad as you call it is still investigating and they have a strong suspicion that it was arson, the story about lilco is a load of crap.
